Singing is the voice of the soul. 

A tribute to its cultural history — in poetry, arias, and song — and to the greatest opera legends of all time: Patti, Callas, and Caruso.

Τη νύχτα, όταν η σιωπή ξυπνά και ο άνεμος αφηγείται το τραγούδι του, η θάλασσα ανυψώνει τη φωνή της, παίζοντας με τη μελωδία των κυμάτων. Φουσκώνει και υποχωρεί, ξεβράζοντας ρυθμικούς, ψιθυριστούς ήχους στην ακτή, ενώ ο χορός των τζιτζικιών ανεβαίνει προς τη Χώρα, αναμιγνύεται με τον κρυστάλλινο ψαλμό των καλογριών και τους βαθιούς τόνους των μοναχών πίσω από τους σεβάσμιους τοίχους των μοναστηριών. Ακόμα και το λιμάνι έχει διαποτιστεί από τα παλιά τραγούδια των ψαράδων, τους άγριους συγχορδικούς ήχους των ναυτικών του παρελθόντος και τους γεμάτους πόθο ήχους των εραστών. Μια μουσική αιώνων, που παγιδεύεται στους βράχους της Πάτμου και επιστρέφει ως το τραγούδι των σειρήνων της ηχούς.

 

Το 2025, ένας χρόνος κατά τον οποίο γιορτάζεται το πιο θαυμαστό και λεπτοκαμωμένο από όλα τα όργανα – η φωνή – μας δίνει την ευκαιρία να αντλήσουμε από την πολυφωνία του νησιού και να διηγηθούμε την ιστορία της φωνής, για τον μαγευτικό της ρόλο στην τέχνη και τον πολιτισμό, για τη μαγεία της, για τη δύναμή της. Πολιτιστικές και ιστορικές στιγμές συνδέονται με διάσημα τραγούδια και οπερατικές άριες – για παράδειγμα από τις όπερες Rusalka, La Traviataκαι L’Elisir d’Amore – καθώς και με αναφορά στο πανευρωπαϊκά εορταζόμενο Έτος Johann Strauss, όπου θα παρουσιαστεί μία άρια από τα έργα του.

Η δύναμη της φωνής γίνεται αισθητή: ως έκφραση της αγάπης, του πόθου, ως εργαλείο αποπλάνησης, χειραγώγησης και επιβολής. Μερικές φορές ένα κρυστάλλινο, υψηλό ντο αγγίζει την καρδιά· άλλες φορές, ένας βαθύς ψίθυρος ή ο τόνος μιας απαγγελίας – όπως όταν παρουσιάζεται ένα ποίημα. Παράλληλα, κείμενα για την πολιτιστική ιστορία της φωνής υφαίνουν ένα κόκκινο νήμα καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της βραδιάς, διανθισμένα με αναφορές σε σημαντικές προσωπικότητες του μουσικού θεάτρου, όπως η Adelina Patti, η πρίμα ντόνα του 19ου αιώνα, η Maria Callas, η αδιαμφισβήτητη βασίλισσα της τραγωδίας, και ο Enrico Caruso, ο πρώτος σούπερ σταρ του κόσμου της όπερας. Power of the Voice
At night, when silence awakens and the wind tells its song, the sea raises its voice, playing with the melody of the waves. It swells and recedes, washing rhythmic, hissing tones ashore, while the chorus of cicadas ascends toward Hora, mingling with the crystal-clear singing of the nuns and the deep tones of the monks behind venerable monastery walls. Even the harbor is steeped in the old songs of fishermen, the wild chords of seafarers of yesteryear, and the yearning sounds of lovers. It is a centuries-old music, caught in the rocks of Patmos and returning as the echoing siren song.

In 2025, a year in which the most wonderful and delicate of all instruments—the voice—is celebrated, we aim to draw from the island’s polyphony and recount the history of the voice: its fascinating role in art and culture, its magic, its power. Cultural and historical moments are intertwined with famous songs and opera arias—such as those from Rusalka, La Traviata, and L’Elisir d’Amore—and with a reference to the Europe-wide celebrated Johann Strauss Year, featuring an aria from his works.

Power of the Voice is made tangible: as an expression of love, of longing, and as a tool of seduction, manipulation, and command. Sometimes a crystal-clear high C touches the heart; other times, it is a deep whisper or the intonation of a recited poem. Likewise, texts on the cultural history of the voice weave a common thread throughout the evening, illustrated with reminiscences of seminal figures in musical theater such as Adelina Patti, the prima donna of the 19th century; Maria Callas, the undisputed queen of tragedy; and Enrico Caruso, the first superstar of the opera world. They are complemented by poetic moments from Rainer Maria Rilke and contemporary writers such as Ernst Jandl and Monika Vasik, who, in her volume Hochgestimmt, transforms vocal performances into poetry. As a counterpart, poems inspired by the arias of Maria Callas, penned by the writer Andreas Timotheou in his collection Robes of Sorrow, are also presented.

THE PARTICIPANTS

OLGA CZERWINSKI (Lyric Soprano)
Born in Ukraine, Austrian citizen. She studied solo voice and vocal/instrumental pedagogy at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz under KS J. Borowska-Isser. During her studies, she already performed roles such as Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Lauretta in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Romilda in Handel’s Xerxes, and Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. She also performed in Dave Brubeck’s To Hope! accompanied by the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra Szombathely in Styria. As a scholarship recipient from the Province of Styria, she studied at the American Institute of Musical Studies. Advanced training with renowned opera singers such as M. Lilowa, S. Saavedra-Edelmann, P. Svensson, B. Nikolov, and A. Garanca. She completed her Master’s degree with distinction and has won several international competitions.

Annually, she performs in more than 100 concerts with various well-known Viennese orchestras in renowned concert halls, and appears as a soloist worldwide. Roles include Susanna in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the State Theatre Oradea (Romania) and Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Bavarian Summer Festival (Germany). Most recently, she was on a highly acclaimed concert tour in China for one and a half months.

 

LUCA LOMBARDO (Tenor / Violinist)
Born in Sicily. Studied violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and trained as a concert soloist under Michael Frischenschlager. He then studied viola and went on international tours (Korea, USA, Mexico, etc.) and collaborated with artists and orchestras including Andrea Bocelli and the Orchestra of San Carlo Naples. His vocal training as a baritone took place in Milan, Trapani, and at the Accademia St. Cecilia in Rome under Renata Scotti. After switching to tenor and studying with several renowned teachers, he has sung in Rome, Vienna, Palermo, Como, Milan, and Istanbul. He teaches at the Verdi Conservatory Milan and at La Scala. Joint projects (with me) at the Volkstheater Vienna, Istanbul, Rome, and Patmos.

WILLI KONSTANTIN (= VASILIS TSIATSIANIS, Pianist)

Born in Athens. Studied music theory, piano, and orchestral conducting at the “Greek Conservatory”. Studied composition under Iván Erőd and conducting under Uroš Lajovic at the University of Music Vienna. From 1994 to 2001, répétiteur at the Greek National Opera. Has appeared as a pianist, conductor, and composer at numerous festivals and in international concert halls. Collaborations with leading artists and orchestras include: Greek National Opera, Lisinski Concert Hall (Zagreb), Athens Festival with Mikis Theodorakis, Igor Zelensky (Kirov/Mariinsky), Pierre Lacotte (Paris Opera), Lorca Massine, Lynn Wallis (Royal Academy of Dance London), Leonide de Pian, Giannis Metsis, Vienna Festival with Mark Morris, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts New York. Lives in Vienna. Theater projects at the Vorarlberg State Theater, Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom, and the Musikverein Vienna.

 

ELISABETH HALIKIOPOULOS (Actress / Singer)
Born in Salzburg. Actress and singer. Studied acting at Mozarteum Salzburg. Flute, piano, modern and ballroom dance (certified). Private vocal training, masterclasses: “Creating Characters” with Susan Batson (Interkunst Berlin), improvisation with Keith Johnstone (Interkunst Berlin), Susan Batson Studio New York City, Summer School of LISPA – London International School of Performing Arts (Berlin), clowning with Pierre Byland, and forum theater workshop with Augusto Boal. Appeared in various films including Rosenheim Cops, In Four Interacts, Funkensprung (dir. Noah Luca), and Der letzte Schrei – hörst Du das? (dir. Jakob Klooth). Theatre engagements at the Salzburg State Theater, including Lucy in The Threepenny Opera (dir. Stephanie Mohr), Erna in Das weite Land (dir. Werner Schneyder), Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (dir. Carl Philip v. Maldeghem), and Mowgli in The Jungle Book (dir. Astrid Großgasteiger). Further work at Freilichtspiele Schwäbisch Hall, Die Arche Vienna, Theater Drachengasse Vienna, Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom, Stell-Theater Vienna. Founder and host of the cultural salon SaloNIKO at Aera, Vienna.

 

SIBYLLE FRITSCH: Production, Idea, Concept, Dramaturgy, Organization
Cultural journalist (editor for profil, Die Welt, Deutsche Bühne, ORF; editor-in-chief at Solidarität, currently freelancing for Salzburger Nachrichten). Consultant to Michael Schottenberg at Volkstheater Vienna and curator of music-theater events (WortundSpiele). Projects: ten years of events for the Rote Bar at the Volkstheater, one year at Bühne Schwarzberg, as well as events for Webster Private University, Vorarlberg State Library and Theater, Schloss Porcia (Carinthia), Favignana (Sicily), Baroque Hall/Old Town Hall/Vienna, Austrian Cultural Forums in Rome and Istanbul, Roter Salon/ÖSTIG, Festsaal of the Brigittenau District Office, Patmos Cultural Center, T-Café/Landestheater Vorarlberg, Theater Nestroyhof-Hamakom Vienna, and Magazin 4 Bregenz.

ΟΛΓΚΑ ΤΣΕΡΒΙΝΣΚΙ (Λυρική Σοπράνο)
Γεννημένη στην Ουκρανία, Αυστριακή υπήκοος. Σπούδασε μονωδία και παιδαγωγική φωνής/οργάνων στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μουσικής και Παραστατικών Τεχνών του Γκρατς με την KS J. Borowska-Isser. Ήδη κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών της ερμήνευσε ρόλους όπως η Γκρέτελ στην Χένσελ και Γκρέτελ του Χούμπερντινκ, η Λαουρέττα στο Τζάνι Σκίκκι του Πουτσίνι, η Ρομίλντα στο Ξέρξης του Χαίντελ και η Μπελίντα στην Διδώ και Αινείας του Πέρσελ. Συμμετείχε επίσης στην Jazz Mass To Hope του D. Brubeck με τη Συμφωνική Ορχήστρα Σόμπατελι της Ουγγαρίας. Ως υπότροφος της Περιφέρειας Στυρίας, σπούδασε στο American Institute of Musical Studies. Παρακολούθησε σεμινάρια με σημαντικούς λυρικούς τραγουδιστές (M. Lilowa, S. Saavedra-Edelmann, P. Svensson, B. Nikolov, A. Garanca). Αποφοίτησε με διάκριση και έχει κερδίσει πολλούς διεθνείς διαγωνισμούς.

Κάθε χρόνο δίνει πάνω από 100 συναυλίες με διάφορες γνωστές βιεννέζικες ορχήστρες σε φημισμένες αίθουσες, καθώς και ως σολίστ σε διεθνείς εμφανίσεις. Έχει τραγουδήσει ως Σουζάννα στο Οι γάμοι του Φίγκαρο του Μότσαρτ στο Κρατικό Θέατρο Οραντέα (Ρουμανία) και ως Ζερλίνα στο Ντον Τζοβάνι του Μότσαρτ στο Διεθνές Θερινό Φεστιβάλ Βαυαρίας. Πρόσφατα περιόδευσε με μεγάλη επιτυχία στην Κίνα για ενάμιση μήνα.

 

ΛΟΥΚΑ ΛΟΜΠΑΡΝΤΟ (Τενόρος / Βιολιστής)
Γεννήθηκε στη Σικελία. Σπούδασε βιολί στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μουσικής Βιέννης, μαθητεύοντας στον Michael Frischenschlager. Ακολούθησε σπουδές βιόλας και περιοδείες σε Κορέα, ΗΠΑ, Μεξικό κ.ά. Συνεργάστηκε με καλλιτέχνες και ορχήστρες όπως ο Andrea Bocelli και η Ορχήστρα Σαν Κάρλο Νάπολης. Ως βαρύτονος σπούδασε σε Μιλάνο, Τράπανι και στην Accademia Santa Cecilia στη Ρώμη με τη Renata Scotti. Μετά την αλλαγή του σε τενόρο, τραγούδησε σε Ρώμη, Βιέννη, Παλέρμο, Κόμο, Μιλάνο, Κωνσταντινούπολη. Διδάσκει στο Ωδείο Βέρντι και στη Σκάλα του Μιλάνου. Κοινά πρότζεκτ με τον συγγραφέα στο Volkstheater Βιέννης, Ρώμη, Κωνσταντινούπολη και Πάτμο.

 

ΒΙΛΙ ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝ (= ΒΑΣΙΛΗΣ ΤΣΙΑΤΣΙΑΝΗΣ, Πιανίστας)
Γεννημένος στην Αθήνα. Σπούδασε θεωρία μουσικής, πιάνο και διεύθυνση ορχήστρας στο «Ελληνικό Ωδείο». Συνέχισε τις σπουδές του στη σύνθεση με τον Ivan Eröd και στη διεύθυνση με τον Uroš Lajovic στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μουσικής της Βιέννης. Από το 1994 έως το 2001, ήταν κορεπετίτορ στην Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή. Έχει εμφανιστεί ως πιανίστας, μαέστρος και συνθέτης σε πολλά φεστιβάλ και διεθνείς αίθουσες. Συνεργασίες: ΕΛΣ, Lisinski Concert Hall (Ζάγκρεμπ), Φεστιβάλ Αθηνών με τον Μίκη Θεοδωράκη, Igor Zelensky, Pierre Lacotte, Lorca Massine, Lynn Wallis, Γιάννης Μέτσης, Wiener Festwochen με Mark Morris, Lincoln Center Νέα Υόρκη. Ζει στη Βιέννη. Συμμετείχε σε θεατρικά πρότζεκτ στο Landestheater Bregenz, Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom, και Musikverein Wien.

 

ΕΛΙΣΑΒΕΤ ΧΑΛΙΚΙΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ (Ηθοποιός / Τραγουδίστρια)
Γεννημένη στο Σάλτσμπουργκ. Ηθοποιός και τραγουδίστρια. Σπουδές υποκριτικής στο Mozarteum Salzburg. Φλάουτο, πιάνο, σύγχρονος και ευρωπαϊκοί χοροί (πιστοποιημένη). Ιδιωτικά μαθήματα φωνητικής. Masterclasses με Susan Batson, Keith Johnstone, LISPA (Βερολίνο), Pierre Byland (κλόουν), Augusto Boal (θέατρο φόρουμ). Συμμετοχές σε ταινίες: Rosenheim Cops, In Four Interacts, Funkensprung (σκην. Noah Luca), Der letzte Schrei (σκην. Jakob Klooth).
